I2T : Learner's Journey Log

The worst and the best part about this project is that, the more you get involved it the more it gets difficult to leave it.

  Understanding of the material

During this project i have worked with multiple material, garden pipe, pvc pipe, sunboard, cardboard, aluminum sheets, aluminum wire, bamboo, mdf.

1- Garden pipe:

 • It's flexible

 • Not very thick

 • Easy to cut

-There were two tools, which were used to cut the garden pipe, paper cutter & scissors, while cutting garden pipe with scissors, I realized that if I'd use that to cut the pipe for a longer time, my palm stated paining but it was easier give directions with scissors.

  • Paper cutter- You can easily work with paper cutter, it's comfortable and smooth while cutting.

2- PVC Pipe

- It's slightly harder and it's slightly thinker than garden pipe, generally used for electric wiring or water wiring, it's breakable but at the same time when it's heated it acts like garden pipe and cam take any shape or form.

  • Hacksaw- While cutting the hacksaw, it's important to keep your shoulder alined with hacksaw & while cutting it, you have to pull the hacksaw a little harder , while pulling it we need to keep in mind that blade should not be bended ( as it's very flexible).

  • Heat- When heated the pvc pipe becomes flexible amd can be bended in any shape you want & in order to keep the bended shape stay, by putting water on it the shape can be permanently changed.

3- Sunboard

Since I have already worked with sunboard, so when this time I was working with it I was using it for slit fit, for example while making the sphere, I had to cut out multiple circle from the board and while mapping minimum wastage of sunboard should be there and for arranging the circles in a sphere I had to slit the circle from side in order to join to circle at the same time for making the sphere the their were three different diameters were required to cut the circle.

4- Cardboard

I have used cardboard to create a hollow surface with cardboard rings, i had to cut multiple circles with different diameters and overlap them in order to create the depth, at the same time, i also used the left over cardboard pieces in order to use the waste and create something new.

5- Aluminum sheet & wire-

With time the project was ahead, we tried to depict emotions with the shape attained, for that i had to go back to one my think lab activity where we were taught to depict emotions with the use of just lines & that learning was used while folding the aluminum wire and manipulating aluminum sheet.

6- Bamboo

Bamboo wasn't a part of my project , but when I saw bamboo I took as a challenge, since i seemed a little close to pvc pipe to me, I wanted to carve spiral like figure out of it and in order to attain that I used hacksaw wherein in the beginning it was a little different for me to give directions with it since I was but eventually I figured out a way to cut it smoothly so afterwards while the final cutout was to be taken out, I didn't wanted it to break so I tried to stressed the thicker part of it to get that cutout of spiral from the Bamboo role.

Tangible & Intangible

  • Tangible - Things that exists in the physical world, having a physical form that we can touch like chair, laptop, speaker, guitar and anything that can be touched.

  • Intangible- Things that we cannot touch or feel, like idea, feelings, law & orders, patent, goodwill.

For the final outcome, I was supposed to depict a particular emotion with my form so I listed down feel of the emotions that wanted to depict, the word that I used was trapped and than i listed down all the human emotions that was related to that feeling of being trapped, for example sadness, uncomfortable, irritated, pain, claustrophobic etc. So first, I used 2D sketch to make a shape that would depict my emotion, again for this task I went back to the think lab activity that how I used lines to depict my emotions and that helped me out and made my process easier & than I had to figure out how I'll be able to bring the shape into a physical form, a tangible thing that would depict my intangible feeling, as a designer it's really important to give a thought on every thing we're creating in the physical world, serving purpose.

FINAL OUTCOME
